More Networking Advice for Introverts

I found this post on networking for introverts or for people who hate networking on Yahoo! Finance. It made me wonder how do people find jobs if they are not posted on Monster.com or on the company websites. Is it really the weak ties through which people hear about job opportunities. For people who are highly skilled, have a very specific training and a vision on how their future job should look like, it seems to be difficult to make it public that they are job hunting, right? I think, in this case the strong ties – people who work closely together, frequently interact with each other and therefore know a lot about each others strenght and weaknesses are probably better suited to recommend jobs or potential employers.

Readers – any advice on how to network for hybrid jobs that bridge academia and industry?
